Zen master and master chef Edward Brown tours the world giving lessons about the art of cooking and the art of living. Following the teachings of the 13th century Zen master Dogen, Brown's recipes for enlightenment are simple and nutritious – not only for the body, but for the soul. In 2006 Doris Dörrie accompanied Brown to Austria, and the Tassajara and San Francisco Zen centres in USA, placing her camera at the table alongside the other participants in Brown's masterclasses. With them, we share in Brown's cooking tips and thoughts about the relationship between eating and living: how life is cooking and cooking is life.

Into the mix, Dörrie also adds a touch of investigation into what eating means to individuals and communities in San Francisco as she visits fast food restaurants and organic farms and speaks to homeless people and a woman whose diet consists solely of what she scavenges from what other people throw away.

Dörrie hopes her film will inspire audiences to "go to the kitchen, take out a knife and just start cutting the carrots, stirring the soup, and washing the rice". Take your seats for a lesson in cooking and in life.
