FILM IST. A GIRL & A GUN
Austria 2009 – Director: Gustav Deutsch – Original language: German – Subtitles: None – Length: 93 min.
Gustav Deutsch, the master of found footage, has once again mined the world’s film archives to construct a universal narrative that speaks of the most fundamental human themes: love, passion, war, violence – the battle of the sexes. In this, the latest instalment of his "Film Ist" series, Deutsch meticulously pieces together images from a multitude of film sources - actuality, melodrama, romance, pornography, propaganda - recontextualising them, accompanying them with a dramatic musical score and affording them new profound meaning. Unfolding in five acts, Genesis, Paradeisos, Eros, Thanatos, and Symposion, Deutsch’s montage evokes Plato and Sappho and the famous Jean-Luc Godard quote "all you need to make a film is a girl and a gun." It is a testament to the art of cinematography and its powers of mythical construction as well as being a stunning audiovisual journey through the first four and a half decades of film history.
