ESTHER UND DIE GEISTER
Germany 2011 – Director: Heidi Specogna – Original language: French, Sango – Subtitles: French, German – Length: 29 min.
"It is the heart of Africa that is sick." The medicine woman is trying to heal 17-year-old Esther’s psychological wounds. But they run deep. She is haunted by a nightmare and so she refuses to leave the house. Her life and that of her family in the Central African Republic have been destroyed. In 2002 Congolese rebels attacked her and her village. After that nothing was the same. Esther and the sadness in her eyes reveal the impact of this seemingly insurmountable trauma.
The director gently approaches her protagonist and skilfully captures the atmosphere with meticulous close-ups. The result is intense and haunting. Maren Willkomm
