35 years ago Luis von Gasteren made a film called Do you understand now why I’m crying?, about the life of a man who had survived the Nazi concentration camps. He had spent four years in different camps and remained locked within the horror of his memories until his death.

The Price Of Survival is the story of his family. His wife and children relate scenes from their home, painting the chilling portrait of a poisoned household where the camps dominated all conversation. Anything the children ever experienced, every little thing was compared to events in the camps. “The traitor never sleeps” and “Trust nobody” were the only directions they got from their father – and were never able to put away. This film captures the way one man’s traumas can infect everyone around him in the most extreme measure.
