DAS SUMMEN DER INSEKTEN - BERICHT EINER MUMIE

“Day 1, 7^th August. I have stopped eating.” So begins the journal of a man who withdrew into the forest and over the course of 60 long days starved himself to death. His journal is a meticulous record of the deterioration of his body and soul as he wistfully awaits his death. The Japanese author Shimada Masahiko wrote a novel based on the man’s authentic account, “Until I am a Mummy.” This text is narrated in a voice-over, which Peter Liechti accompanies with an impressive visual interpretation of the author’s words. Inescapably we slide with the dying into death. We experience with him the gradual retreat of reality as his body and consciousness sink into an eternal abyss.
