CHOROPAMPA, EL PRECIO DE ORO
Peru 2002 – Director: Ernesto Cabellos – Co-Director: Stephanie Boyd – Original language: Spanisch und Englisch – Subtitles: English – Length: 75 min.
When a truck transporting mercury for one of the world's largest mining corporations loses 151 kilos of its load, three Peruvian villages are devastated. Over 900 people are poisoned, but the corporation and the government refuse to take responsibility. The victims are not compensated; their requests for healthcare are refused. Instead, regulations for the legal limit of mercury contents are simply changed. In Choropampa, civil resistance against a government, which refuses to help and support its citizens, is formed.
The situation escalates, when the villagers use a four day roadblock as their last means. The police intervene, and the only result is the state prosecution of Choropampa's mayor.
"A powerful film. Hopefully it will serve as a wake-up call to mining companies worldwide that people come first." Lucien Chauvin, Washington Post
