CHEMIA (CHEMO)
Poland 2009 – Director: Paweł Łoziński – Original language: Polish – Subtitles: English – Length: 58 min.
What catches your eye right from the beginning of this film is a smile on the faces of its protagonists. Over the course of a year the director Łoziński follows cancer patients as they undergo chemotherapy as out-patients. In close-up he captures their laughter, the effortlessness of their sometimes grave conversations and their distracted glances at the trees outside the window. How will it go on? How will it end? In this film we learn almost nothing about the medical side of things. Taking centre stage is not the patient but a person with feelings, thoughts and dreams. Łoziński’s film is intensive as well as touching but not overly sad; like life, it is fateful.
