BOLERO
Belgien 1977 – Director: Maurice Béjart – Original language: French – Length: 16 min.
Maurice Béjart's choreography of the "Bolero" is legendary. A soloist interprets Ravel's musical loop, a chorus of dancers visualizes the rhythm. This dance is not an illustration, it itself is pure music. 1961 "Bolero" was performed for the first time. In 1977 the diva of the Bolschoi Theatre Maia Plissetskaia danced the "Bolero" at age fifty and thus began her second career as an interpreter of modern dance.
Maurice Béjart about Bolero: "The music is almost too well known and yet it never gets old, thanks to its simplicity. A melody winding tirelessly around itself; it gets louder and more intense, it swallows the sound-space and finally itself."
