ALL ABOUT DARFOUR
UK 2005 – Director: Taghred Elsanhouri – Original language: Arabic, English – Subtitles: English – Length: 81 min.
While studying in London Taghreed Elsanhouri fell in love with a young doctor who, like herself, originated from Sudan. The motivation for this film came when Elsanhouri's boyfriend broke off their relationship, explaining that they couldn't be together because their families came from different ethnic and religious groups. All About Darfour is a personal voyage of discovery, which takes Elsanhouri back to her homeland in an attempt to understand the reasons behind the civil conflicts that divide Sudan.
The methods behind the director's investigation are straightforward: she simply invites a diverse range of people - from the pupils at her old primary school to professors at the University - to articulate their thoughts about the fierce divisions between Islam and Christianity, between the Arabs and Africans.
In a café in Khartoum Elsanhouri conducts a group interview with the mostly male customers. Laughing shyly in the background is Theresa, the young owner, who seems reluctant to engage in the dialogue. Suddenly though she speaks up stating that her parents were both shot dead by the army. "You see me laughing here," she says, "but you have no idea."
