The Shosholoza Express travels the distance between Johannesburg and Cape Town. As it transports its passengers to their destinations, black people and white people encounter each other and share their personal experiences of Apartheid. Political activists, ANC members and former terrorists have their say alongside Afrikaans-speaking Boers and it becomes clear that a real togetherness still does not exist. The film relies completely on its strong protagonists. The outside world is simply revealed through incidental shots of the landscape passing by. A multi-facetted picture of today’s South Africa emerges, shedding new light on issues of racial segregation and cultural identity. In the end does the journey really lead to a “new” South Africa beyond prejudice?
