In LA ISLA the meticulous bureaucracy of a regime of terror is laid bare. After an explosion in the capital of Guatemala in 2005 an archive was exposed in which the atrocities of the country’s military dictatorship were recorded in millions of files. Little by little the extent of the regime’s crimes was revealed. The toll: 45,000 missing and 20,000 corpses, which lie unidentified in graves marked “XX.” Personal contributions from countless workers involved in the fact-finding commission, along with the exceptional visual staging of archive material from US and European sources in huge wall projections confront us with a piece of hidden history.
