International Conference – Day 1

What does it take to create a TV programme the audience wants to see? How to make sure that out of the huge amount of offers available, a documentary film will be picked?

From 4 to 5 May 2023, the international conference at DOK.fest München in partnership with Documentary Campus and Bayerischer Rundfunk will focus on the audience behavior and question how to attract – or say even “seduce” – the audience and to promote your programme.

Based on brand new European audiences research, we will analyze facts and figures in a session of strategic reflection, followed by an interactive working format to put knowledge into practice and create a toolkit for broadcasters and programmers.

We will also explore fresh perspectives through the lens of new technologies serving the broadcasting industries, discuss how to make the most of libraries, their relevance for the broadcasters as well as for emerging filmmakers, dissect monetization strategies for creators, and debate how to handle distribution and exploitation rights best in an ever changing media landscape.

The conference is curated and moderated by AC Coppens/THE CATALYSTS.

In this unique and poetic talk, Nusrat Durrani makes a compelling case for addressing the crisis of imagination in the Western film industry by tapping into talent and stories from unseen places and creating a new global mythology and a richer, more inclusive narrative of our time.

14.30–17.00 Interactive session: Beyond Business: Meaningful D&I to Reach (New) Audiences
As documentaries gain popularity, diverse content is crucial to reaching new audiences, and ensuring meaningful inclusion on and off-screen is essential amidst the current climate of performative inclusion. This informal, guided discussion format will bring together creatives, producers, and distributors to discuss challenges and solutions for achieving meaningful inclusion from their respective perspectives.

Sami Arpa
(Largo.ai)

Sami is the founder and CEO of Largo – a Switzerland based company that provides data-assisted intelligence to the audio-visual industry. Sami has a background in computer science and film industry. He has got his Ph.D. in computer vision field from the Swiss university, EPFL. He has directed two short films - “Les bruits des pas”, 2014 and “L’evasion”, 2015. He is also the founder and president of Ouch Film Awards, which is a film festival that takes place in Lausanne.

Fiona Gillies worked extensively in film & TV as an actor before becoming an independent film producer and co-founder of My SMASH Media. Fiona met fellow producer Christine Hartland on the Creative England Market Trader programme and in partnership with tech expert Mahesh Ramachandra, they founded My SMASH Media. Fiona produced THE BEAT BENEATH MY FEET which was in competition at the Berlin Film Festival and subsequently released worldwide. DUMMY, which premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival and BIFA nominated CITY SLACKER are available in over 40 countries worldwide. She received funding from Creative England & BFI for SOME SWEET OBLIVIOUS ANTIDOTE starring Sir Lenny Henry and Wumni Mosaku. My SMASH Media website is here and 90 second video is here. Peder Haugfos is passionate about creating atteniton. He`s a Creative Strategist & Business Executive whos passionate about creating and transforming ideas, aspirations, and passions into successful tangible products and narratives. Educated in journalism, design methodology, entrepreneurship, and innovation management, Haugfos has a cross-disciplinary mindset. Through his work with creative concept development and current innovation projects in the Norwegian media industry, he has a strong understanding of the latest development in the industry and in youth culture and in different ways for getting the youngster's attention in today's fragmented media reality. ?

Marion is a freelance project manager and consultant for individuals and organisations. Marion is the co-director of the Documentary Association of Europe (DAE) and co-founder of DOX BOX e.V., where she held several positions till April 2020 and was the project director of the international Documentary Convention 2018 & 2019. Marion is a consultant to the film department of DW Akademie, and has contributed her expertise to projects of the Goethe-Institut and elbarlament GmbH. Marion sits on the board of several organisations in the film world, and is part of initiatives that champion anti-racism, equality, fair working conditions and representation in the film and NGO sector, and the society at large.
