VORES LYKKES FJENDER (ENEMIES OF HAPPINESS)
Dänemark 2006 – Director: Eva Mulvad – Original language: English, Pashtu, Persian – Subtitles: English – Length: 58 min.
Winner of the Sundance 2006 World Cinema Jury Prize in Documentaries, Enemies of Happiness follows the campaign of Malalai Joya, a young Afghan woman standing in the country's first democratic parliamentary elections for 35 years.
Amidst vivid images of Farah Province, we join the final weeks of her campaign, where the many death threats made because of her outspoken opposition to the warlords in the government restrict her movements. Acting as mediator and advocate, she arbitrates between a wife and her violent husband and counsels a family who must marry off their young daughter to a much older man. Protected by armed guards, Joya visits poor rural areas to address the women, becoming their voice and pledging to "expose the enemies of peace, women and democracy". We see how her commitment inspired many Afghanis to join her quest for real reform. This documentary is both a portrait of this extraordinary freedom fighter, and of life and politics in war-torn Afghanistan.Award: Silver Wolf Award, IDFA Amsterdam 2006; World Cinema Jury Prize in the Documentary Section, Sundance Festival 2007; Special Mention of the Main Jury, One World Festival Prague 2007
