Block I: FORBIDDEN FILMS – SYRIAN AUTEUR CINEMA OF THE SEVENTIES AND NINETIES

Six documentary films by Syrian filmmakers chart the development of the country’s film history – from the uprising in the 1970s, through political backlashes to the present day.

Syrian cinema is not well known in the West. Despite censorship, since the 1970s aesthetically ground-breaking, critical auteur films have been made. Their themes are poverty and militarisation, oppression and structural violence and the ever-smouldering conflict with Israel. Silvia Bauer
