Retrospective: Wim Wenders
VIEL PASSIERT - DER BAP FILM
Deutschland 2002 – Director: Wim Wenders – Original language: German – Subtitles: None – Length: 96 min.
“A damn long time ago, a damn long time ago,” these are surely the most well known lyrics of the Cologne rock band, BAP, and long ago they contributed to the band’s international fame - mostly because they are always sung in the Cologne dialect. Wim Wenders portrait of the band is a snapshot in time and, at the same time, looks back over more than 25 years of the group’s history. Wenders skilfully blends TV archive material, interviews with the band and their associates, cameos from Willy Millowitsch and the Nobel Prize-winner, Heinrich Böll and fictional scenes with actors such as Joachim Król and Maria Bäumler, as well as striking views of the Rhineland and, of course, images from Cologne. At the film’s core lie BAP’s songs and lyrics, which alternate between political engagement and private melancholy. “A damn long time ago.” Daniel Sponsel
