DAS SCHIFF DES TORJÄGERS
CH/DE 2010 – Director: Heidi Specogna – Original language: Afrikaans, English, French, German – Subtitles: German – Length: 91 min.
The most dramatic of stories come from life itself. In 2001 a ferry called Etireno owned by the Nigerian Bundesliga player Jonathan Akpoborie made headlines for allegedly transporting child slaves off the coast of West Africa. The scandal led to Akpoborie being thrown out of VfL Wolfsburg, the club he was playing for at the time. Today the question of the football star’s guilt or innocence remains unresolved. Yet this film focuses not on the question of who is culpable but on the fate of the children involved. These days many of them are living once again with the parents who, back then, were prepared to send them away. This brings about some emotionally charged confrontations. Heidi Specogna sheds light on the various aspects of what happened back then without making any hasty judgements.
