“When you have suffered this much you would do anything,” says one of the immigrants that the director Mollard follows in ADRIFT. For two years Mollard travelled regularly to Mali, Mauritania and Senegal. He wanted to understand the motivation of the people who flee towards the supposed dreamland of Europe and, in so doing, put their lives on the line. Thousands of people die every year in simple fishing boats attempting the dangerous crossing from West Africa to the Canary Islands._Mollard gets incredibly close to the desperate individuals who hope to escape their homeland of Africa. He infiltrates gangs of people smugglers and eventually manages to get on one of the ships carrying refugees. His footage of this inhumane journey is unprecedented. 1,000 kilometres to freedom?
