DOK.fest is in the Here&Now: HI, AI

in cooperation with MVHS

The future is uncertain, they say. The future is none of our business, some philosophers claim. The future is not happening, according to a number of dystopias. Four documentary films look into the world of tomorrow. They may not reveal what will be, but they explore what is already possible today and what will play a role in the future. For example, they shed light on the comprehensive monitoring of all data by global software companies that operate beyond state regulation. They follow our approach to death and the attempts to overcome its irreversibility with AI-controlled programmes. They follow the emotional bonds between humans and robots and examine the significance of gender in the future.

HI, AI

Deutschland 2019 – Director: Isa Willinger – Original language: English, German, Italian, Japanese – Subtitles: German – Length: 87 min.

“With AI, you have to keep your sentences short and to the point.” Chuck receives this advice when he takes delivery of his new robot partner Harmony, fresh from the factory. On the other side of the world, in Tokyo, Grandma Sakurai receives the cute robot Pepper as a gift from her son so that she feels less lonely. But Pepper soon turns out to be quite stubborn. How will we live with artificial intelligence? What will we gain, what will we lose? This documentary shows us tomorrow already today.
