SOLLBRUCHSTELLE

Deutschland 2008 – Director: Eva Stotz – Original language: German – Subtitles: English – Length: 61 min.

Stephan’s new job is to sit for 8 days and nights high above street level strapped onto a gigantic billboard waving back at all passers-by who greet him. Gunnar is a freelancer who receives training on how to brand his body as a trademark. Saskia, who has just left school, is learning how to write successful job applications and fears that "without a job, you are nothing." Meanwhile Franz, the director’s own father, sits isolated in an empty office with nothing to do for nine months. Franz was made redundant after 40 years employment. He sued the company he worked for and, although he won the lawsuit, due to the ongoing psychological strain of his situation, he lost his dignity and mental health all the same. Sollbruchstelle reflects on the current conditions and absurdities of work in our "modern times." The hustle and bustle of employment in urban settings is juxtaposed with the tranquillity of a flock of sheep and a shepherd at dawn. The city clerks and the herdsman seem worlds apart - almost from different eras - and yet we realise that in our disciplined race for status and self-control we have lost an essential connection with our selves.
