RIP: A REMIX MANIFESTO

Kanada 2008 – Director: Brett Gaylor – Original language: English – Length: 80 min.

"Sampling is an instrument" – The cult DJ, Girl Talk, pulls magic out of his laptop and the crowd freaks out! A master of mash-up, he mixes samples of existing music into new songs, hereby "violating" unaffordable intellectual properties, as does director Brett Gaylor, who shows the DJ at work. The mash-up artists call remix their new and universal language. But what about the protection of intellectual property? Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor is on the side of the Copy Lefts who fight for free access to source material. On the other side, the Copy Rights seek to defend the old, established film and music industries. This journey through today’s musical landscape takes us to Brazil where we meet the country’s former cultural minister Gilberto Gil who introduced an alternative copyright law enhancing the remix culture. Meanwhile Gaylor stays true to his "fair use" principles by sharing his raw footage of animations, collages and archive material on his website, making it available for anyone to remix. This film is his bold manifesto.
