HFF and More, Part 1
DAS GEGENTEIL VON ARBEIT
Deutschland 2009 – Director: Xenia Sigalova – Original language: German – Length: 70 min.
Every Monday to Wednesday from 2-5pm long-term benefits claimants find sanctuary in a theatre project in Ulm. Under the auspices of a scheme that offers financial incentives for those on benefits to take up work opportunities (pejoratively known as 1-Euro-jobs) erstwhile factory workers, blue-collar employees and academics drink coffee, chat, snooze and occasionally do some acting. No one is forced to take part if they don’t want to. For the most part the people seem satisfied: the project offers them a place to go and a chance to mix with others in the same situation as themselves. It is only Klaus who gets frustrated by the lethargy he perceives around him but when he tries to organise his colleagues, conflict ensues. This project in Ulm is ostensibly about theatre but Xenia Siglova’s film uncovers the real issues that are at stake here, such as how Germany’s benefits claimants are really expected to function in society. The dark theatre room is both protective bubble and pressure chamber. Politically relevant and admirably subversive, this is an illuminating drama.

RUTA DEL CHE
Deutschland, Bolivien 2009 – Director: Yvonne Rüchel-Aebersold / Philip Koch – Original language: German, Spanish – Subtitles: English – Length: 46 min.
In November 1966 Ernesto Che Guevara headed for Bolivia with a handful of guerrilla fighters. His idealistic and overambitious plan was to spark a revolution that would engulf the whole of Latin America. The adventure was to go down in history as the last great fight of El Che. In October 1967 Guevara was captured by the military and he was executed shortly thereafter.
These days the guerrillas’ route through the jungle, the Ruta del Che, has become a pilgrimage trail. The German-Bolivian Klaus Schütt believes that the development of a tourist industry here could offer a route out of poverty for the local population. His idea doesn’t inspire much enthusiasm. In discussions with villagers, contemporary witnesses, and the proud owners of quaint Che relics a deep ambivalence towards Guevara – somewhere between disdain and adoration - emerges. A compelling picture of Bolivia and its people, this lively road movie offers something for everyone, not just for the devoted followers of the Commandante.
