WAVUMBA
Niederlande 2012 – Director: Jeroen van Velzen – Original language: English, Swahili – Subtitles: English – Length: 80 min.
“In Kenya there are two worlds. That of the people and that of the spirits. They are mirror images of each other.” Jeroen van Velzen returns to Kenya to rediscover the magical world of his childhood. He accompanies the old fisherman, Masoud, and his grandson, Lonya, as they work on an old rowing boat. The old man can still read the signs of the underwater world. As one of the last in a long line of fishermen from the Wavumba tribe he is familiar with the persuasiveness of the female sea spirits and Wasani, the sacred island of the shamans and strongmen. Masoud could once catch fish as big as his boat with his bare hands. To capture a shark like that just one last time is his biggest dream. A visually stunning epic about Kenyan magic and the conquerors of the sea. Carolina Piotrowski
