The programme of DOK.forum 2021 @home

The industry platform takes place online again

DOK.forum 2021 @home, the industry platform of DOK.fest München, will take place from 05 to 14 May. Once again this year, the numerous workshops, pitchings and discussion rounds will take place digitally. The industry platform promotes a lively exchange with (inter)national guests and filmmakers. This year, the digital space once again offers the opportunity to overcome geographical and economic boundaries and to offer an extensive programme in which diverse voices will have their say.

Participation in the public events of DOK.forum @home is free of charge for all filmmakers. Registration for the events is necessary.

A total of six awards with prize money totalling 12,500 euros will be awarded. New are the DOK.series Award, dedicated to serial documentary formats, and the DOK.edit Award – presented by Adobe, which honours outstanding editing achievements. In addition, DOK.digital – Award for New Narrative Formats will be awarded for the second time with exciting pitches on digital documentary and journalistic storytelling. The British Pathé Archive Award honours outstanding archive film projects. The German Composition Award honours strong composition ideas for documentary film projects. The Pitch Award of the Haus des Dokumentarfilms recognises the best student film concept.

The programme

With 26 public events, the DOK.forum Perspectives offer the most extensive edition to date and set four programme focal points. New Media presents projects dedicated to innovative forms of documentary storytelling. The new programme series Re:arranging Reality revolves around post-production in documentary film. Media policy opens up a platform that provides space for the discussion of media policy issues. In the Workshops & Consultancies section, renowned international experts from the industry will be available for individual consultations and workshops will explore festival strategies, ways to international co-productions and impact producing.

At the DOK.forum Marketplace we will present 50 projects in various stages of development – from the first idea to the rough cut. For the first time, the Master's Pitch will also take place online: Nine selected teams will present their documentary film in the making to an audience and receive valuable feedback. In other formats such as roundtables and screenings, as well as in four competitions with prize money, the project teams meet around 100 experts from production, editing, promotion and distribution.

Statements of DOK.forum

Florina Vilgertshofer, Director of DOK.forum Perspectives: "It is important to us to continue to offer further training and networking opportunities for filmmakers and to facilitate close exchange and discourse among each other. Our dense programme represents the most pressing topics of the moment. Besides all the challenges the industry is struggling with because of the pandemic, there is at least one advantage: the digital format allows many more people to participate in DOK.forum @home – also internationally. No one has to travel, that saves resources and also people can participate who otherwise could not come to us for political or economic reasons. We want to support the industry in the best possible way: that's why our programme is free of charge, to really enable every person to participate in the discourse in these difficult times."

Sina Weber, Head of DOK.forum Marketplace: "In the past year, we have been able to gain valuable experience and can now respond even better to the new needs of the industry: we offer opportunities for exchange in numerous one-to-one meetings, project pitches and digital social events. We are pleased that, despite the aggravated pandemic situation, we are able to present two more new awards with the DOK.edit Award – presented by Adobe and the DOK.series Award to honour and support special and innovative formats of documentary storytelling. Our goal continues to be to support young filmmakers and projects in their early stages and to give them more visibility right now, so that outstanding documentaries will continue to be made in the future."
