DEN FRIEDEN IN DER HAND. DAS HOLZKIRCHNER WALLFAHRTSGELÜBDE
Deutschland 2003 – Director: Joseph Vilsmaier und Marcus H. Rosenmüller – Original language: German – Length: 43:35 min.
The inhabitants of the small village of Holzkirchen in Lower Bavaria have a strange tradition: Every year in spring, they set off for a pilgrimage to the nearby mountain, Bogenberg, and thus fulfil a 500 year-old vow. They have to carry a heavy candle up the hill. The candle is 512 inches long, weighs110 pounds and has to be held upright all the time. Hundreds of people have come to watch the pilgrims participate in this unusual spectacle.
The whole village is fascinated by the pilgrimage, Christians and non-Christians alike. This unique and powerful experience of walking, praying and meditating together fills the people with energy for the rest of the year.
