What does football have to do with politics? In the town of Donetsk deep in Eastern Ukraine, at least, the answer is: a lot. The local club Shakhtar Donetsk’s crowning glory was winning the 2009 UEFA Cup. But Jakob Preuss’s film is not about the players; it is about the fans. Stephanovich and his girlfriend Valya work tirelessly for low wages in an old coalmine. Meanwhile the budding politician Kolja works on his career and the resident billionaire Achmetow pulls the strings thanks to his wealth. Miners and oligarchs – the divide could not be deeper. In the stadium their worlds meet each other._THE OTHER CHELSEA is a fascinating investigation of a region caught between power and impotence, stagnation and development, sport and politics.
