Award Ceremony of the VFF Documentary Film Production Award

Award ceremony with guests and talk with the producers.

The VFF Documentary Film Production Award will be presented for the fourth time at the 36th DOK.fest Munich. The prize honours the work of documentary film producers. 

This year the prize goes to the production trio Frank Müller, Guevara Namer and Antonia Kilian, who also directed the film. We talk to the Produzent.innen about the making of this outstanding film. THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER will be screened in the DOK.fest München @home programme.

Combat training instead of forced marriage and IS? 19-year-old Hala escapes from Minbij in North Syria across the Euphrates and ends up in the Kurdish military. After her training she returns to her hometown as a police officer with the intention of saving her younger sisters.

Jury DOK.forum Award Ceremony VFF Documentary Film Production Award (Ambrosia Film)

Berlin director Halina Dyrschka first studied acting and classical singing before completing her Master of Arts in Film Production. She then founded the production company AMBROSIA FILM. Her first short film as director "9einhalbs Abschied" was shown at over 40 film festivals worldwide and won more than 10 awards, including the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Prize and the German Audio Film Award. Besides writing screenplays, she has spent the last 5 years intensively researching Hilma af Klint. JENSEITS DES SICHTBAREN is her feature film debut and the first film ever about the pioneer of abstraction.

Thomas Frickel

After studying German language and literature, journalism and sociology in Mainz, Frickel worked as a freelance journalist for several years, focusing on cultural reporting and historical reportage. Since 1968 he has been working in the film industry. Since 1986, Frickel has been chairman and managing director of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Dokumentarfilm (the largest association for independent film in Germany) in various film and cultural policy functions - for example, on the administrative board and executive committee of the FFA, the administrative board of the VG Bild-Kunst, as delegate of the beneficiaries in the VG Wort, on the advisory board of the VFF and the Künstlersozialkasse, etc. For several years he was spokesman for the Film/Media section of the "German Cultural Council". Frickel was also co-founder and until 1999 member of the board of directors of the European Documentary Film Network EDN. He is author, director and producer of numerous short and feature-length documentaries.

 

Antonia Kilian
CEO (Pink Shadow Films)

Antonia Kilian is a director, camerawoman and producer between Kassel and Berlin. She studied visual communication as well as art and media at the Berlin University of the Arts and cinematography at the Film University in Potsdam Babelsberg and at the ISA in Havana, Cuba. She works as a camerawoman for feature and documentary films and produces artistically sophisticated auteur films with her production company Pink Shadow Films, based in Kassel. Her directorial debut "The Other Side of the River" celebrates its world premiere in the F: ACT Award competition at the CPH: DOX Festival and was nominated for the VFF Production Prize.

Frank Müller
Filmmaker (Doppelplusultra Filmproduktion GmbH)

Frank Müller is a passionate filmmaker. He studied film directing in Moscow in the 1990s and made award-winning shorts and documentaries. In 2000 he founded Doppelplusultra Filmproduktion in Hamburg, which initially produced TV reports and image films and in addition to that since 2013 international creative documentaries . Frank Müller participated in numerous international documentary film workshops such as Eurodoc. His films are regularly shown at major film festivals and have received important awards.

Guevara Namer

Guevara is a Syrian Kurdish photographer and documentary filmmaker based in Berlin, started her career in Damascus 2005.

Sonia Otto

Sonia studied Cultural Studies in Berlin and Audiovisual Media in Seville.
