Regulations for the film submission to DOK.fest München 2022
Thank you very much for your interest in submitting your film to the 37th DOK.fest München!
DOK.fest München is the festival for international artistically outstanding and socially relevant documentary films. As the largest festival of its kind in Germany, it has also become one of the most relevant platforms for documentary film in Europe in recent years.
After two successful online editions that achieved a new audience record nationwide, DOK.fest München is set to return to the cinema in 2022. At the same time, we would like to take up the impulses of recent years and create additional digital offerings. In view of a future that remains difficult to assess, the film programme is currently planned in dual form.
1. General entry conditions
Every documentary film submitted for DOK.fest München 2022 must fulfill the following requirements:
- Your film must have been completed after 1st January 2021.
- We accept films with a duration of at least 52 minutes.
- Submitted films must not have been screened in Germany publicly, nor may they have been shown on German public television before the festival. Furthermore, films that are freely available on internet platforms are automatically excluded from the selection process.
- The film must be submitted by 17th December 2021 via the online form and with confirmation of payment by email.
2. Language version
For foreign films, English or German subtitles are mandatory. For the screening process, they are not obligatory for films in English, French, Spanish or Czech. Please write a short comment that you will deliver the subtitles at a later stage. All films selected for the festival must have English or German subtitles.
3. Programming / selection
All programme decisions are made by our selection committee. We do not accept submissions for specific sections. The head of programme takes ultimate responsibility for the film’s selection and the allocation of the different sections. For competitive sections, world premieres will be favoured, the German premiere status is mandatory. Premieres will also be preferred for non-competitive sections.
In case of an online version of our festival, the regular programme structure as well as an accompanying programme (opening, jury viewings, Q&As, award ceremonies, etc.) will be retained for the most part.
4. Granting of rights, legal guarantees and exemptions
By submitting your film you guarantee that you are the sole owner of all rights (the exhibition rights for the film and the trailer, the rights for making public, duplicating and distributing the press material, the rights for making public the trailer) and, in case your film is selected, that you are able to grant these rights to DOK.fest München. You also guarantee that the film you have submitted does not infringe any personal or other rights of third parties. The same applies to the assignment of rights for the additional digital presentation of the film.
With the notification of the film selection, these rights are granted to DOK.fest München without the requirement of any further declaration. You then indemnify DOK.fest München from any claims by third parties in connection with the rights mentioned in section 4, paragraph 1.
If your film is selected we require press and photo material to be provided promptly. By accepting our regulations you commit to making digital material (Online download link, DVD, photos, texts, trailer) available to the festival for the purposes of PR and advertising in our print materials, on the website and on the popular social media channels during DOK.fest München. Likewise, you agree that DOK.fest München can use film extracts of up to three minutes in length within the coverage of the festival, on the website and on the DOK.fest München blog. DOK.fest München reserves the right to pass on photos and trailers to selected partners for promotion purposes.
6. Exhibition format
The following exhibition formats are permitted:
- DCI compliant Digital Cinema Package DCP
- ProRes File 4.2.2 HQ (Sound format 5.1.) (Only for our special venues)
7. Submission fee
Due to the large number of applications we receive and the high processing costs associated with this, we feel impelled to charge an administration fee. The fee amounts to 40 Euros per application, with exception of submissions from emerging countries (production country and not film location applies). You will find a list of all countries in the online form. Submissions for DOK.education are exempt from the fee.
8. Submission steps

- We are looking for artistically narrated documentary short films of up to 30 minutes in length.
- The content must focus on the lives and/or perspectives of children or young adults.

DOK.fest München pays screening fees, both for the presentation in the cinemas and additionally on the digital screen. The screening fee is agreed upon in consultation with the rights holders – taking into account the best possible presentation of the festival films, we focus on invitations to the filmmakers and the corresponding (partially) reimbursement of travel and hotel costs. Besides, films in our competitive sections and, moreover, all festival films have the chance of winning a prize in various cross-sectional competitions (SOS Kinderdörfer weltweit, Documentary Music Award, VFF Documentary Film Production Award and FFF Documentary Talent Award). Further claims regarding taking over expenses or other forms of payment or compensation are excluded.
11. Validity of the entry conditions
By completing the registration using the online form you accept the validity of the entry conditions. These entry conditions apply to all current film submissions, even when they are not explicitly stipulated once again. DOK.fest does not accept any differing conditions, despite any knowledge of them, unless DOK.fest has explicitly accepted their validity in writing.
12. Place of jurisdiction and the application of German law
Munich is understood as the place of jurisdiction as far as it is permissible. The law of the Federal Republic of Germany applies to the exclusion of conflicting laws.
