Film Series: 50th Anniversary of the 1972 Munich Olympics

March to September 2022

DER ELFTE TAG - DIE ÜBERLEBENDEN VON MÜNCHEN (Germany 2012, Emanuel Rotstein)

The 1972 Olympic Games: Dachshund mascots, top sporting performances and terrorist violence that overshadows everything characterize the major event in Munich. 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the Games. From March to September, we will be commemorating this memorable anniversary with a film series – in cooperation with many cultural partners in Munich.

Films will be shown that take a concrete look at the terrorist attack and address the lasting traumas and injuries. Other contributions take us into the world of competitive sports beyond the act of violence that shook Munich and the world. We experience the Olympic spirit and athletic characters, the daily challenges for high-performance athletes as well as the dark sides, personal renunciation and, last but not least, the political instrumentalization of young athletes in the GDR.

The year-round program begins in March as part of the Hier & Jetzt film series in cooperation with the Munich Community College (Volkshochschule, MVHS). Together with the Munich Student Union and the Pinakothek der Moderne, further events will be shown over the summer and into the fall to mark the 50th anniversary of the Olympic Games in Munich.
