Malcolm has a dream: in the end, when he can’t feel the fatigue and pain any more, his fists are hoisted into the air: “The Winner is…!” This young man from LA’s reality consists of poverty, a lack of opportunities and a dream. They can be found here in all weathers in Los Reyes, the oldest skate park in Santiago de Chile, where youth hangs out. This is home to two stray dogs, Chola and Football. A portrait of a section of Chilean society from an unusual perspective.
LOS VIEJOS – THE OLDIES (Großbritannien, Cuba, Venezuela 2018, Rosana Matecki, DOK.panorama). Three elderly musicians in Santa Clara, Cuba. Despite their advanced age, Zaida, Cándido and Bringuez’s passion has not faded in the least. A film about growing old that does not romanticise and celebrates the joy of living.
LOSING ALASKA (Niederlande, Großbritannien, Tschechische Republik 2018, Tom Burke, DOK.focus humaNature). While Trump casts doubt on climate change, in Alaska, as the permafrost melts at an ever-increasing rate, a town is sinking into the sea. Forgotten by the rest of America, the Yupik in their corrugated metal huts are seeing their community disintegrate.
MANN AUF BLAU (Deutschland 2018, Friedrich Tiedtke, Student Award). Everything from the beginning. After completing his master's degree at the UdK Berlin, Henri Haake begins his quiet attempt to manoeuvre as a free artist from vernissage to vernissage. Sensitive character study of a seeker.
MANU (Belgien 2018, Emmanuelle Bonmariage, DOK.panorama). When the documentary maker becomes the protagonist: Emmanuelle follows her father, the legendary Belgian director, Manuel Bonmariage, with her camera and learns about some incredible things – from an attempted poisoning to a double life. A humorous, personal, light-footed portrait.
MARCELINE. A WOMAN. A CENTURY (Niederlande, Frankreich 2018, Cordelia Dvorák, DOK.special). She always offered herring and vodka to the visitors in her apartment in St. Germain de Prés. Marceline Loridan-Ivens, survivor from Birkenau and later actress, filmmaker and writer, was a rebel all her life. Courageous, angry and radical she started her first movies under the influence of the Nouvelle Vague. Later she moved around the world with the legendary documentary film pioneer Joris Ivens, her second husband, and made political films.
MASTER OF DISASTER (Deutschland, Schweiz 2019, Jörg Haaßengier, Jürgen Brügger, DOK.deutsch). The sirens blare out; a catastrophe is rehearsed. Hyperreal practice-runs, planning exercises and simulations give rise to the disturbing dystopia of emergency. The film of the hour: thrilling, complex and alarming.
