SPK KOMPLEX – SPK COMPLEX (Deutschland 2018, Gerd Kroske, DOK.special). Five hundred gun licenses for patients – this is what a Socialist Patients’ Collective leaflet called for on the eve of the German Autumn. Wouldn’t that be the most effective psychotherapy for us all: the abolition of the capitalist patriarchal society? The director Gerd Kroske digs deep into a little known chapter of German history.
SPRECHSTUNDE – ATELIER DE CONVERSATION (Österreich / Frankreich 2017, Bernhard Braunstein, Best of Fests). What do clichees and a metro station have to do with each other? What is the meaning of love? What do people miss the most when they are far away from home? We learn the answers to these questions in a weekly discussion group at Paris’ Centre Pompidou. People with the most diverse identities and backgrounds get together to discuss with one another.
SYSTEM ERROR (Deutschland 2017, Florian Opitz, DOK.international). Melting polar ice caps, disappearing rain forests, financial crises wherever you look. Despite this, those responsible for the realities of today’s capitalism cannot imagine a world without growth. How long can the good times last?
TEXAS KABUL (Deutschland 2004, Helga Reidemeister, Retrospektive). From India to Serbia, from Afghanistan to USA – four site inspections and four meetings with women who refuse to accept war quietly. “Haven’t we all helped fascism along its way.”
THE LONELY BATTLE OF THOMAS REID – THE LONELY BATTLE OF THOMAS REID (Irland 2017, Feargal Ward, DOK.international). Thomas Reid seems to live a timeless existence. With a couple of cattle the solitary farmer quietly goes about his business far removed from the Irish economic boom. Feargal Ward’s delicate poem about being an outsider captivates with its lyrical images and enchanting music.
THE RIGHTS OF NATURE: A GLOBAL MOVEMENT – THE RIGHTS OF NATURE: A GLOBAL MOVEMENT (USA 2018, María Valeria Berros, Hal Crimmel, Issac Goeckeritz, DOK.special). It is still a small group, but the scientists and environmental activists who have vowed to change our concept of nature forever are celebrating their first successes. They are fighting for the recognition of inalienable, enforceable basic rights for nature – worldwide.
TIERE UND ANDERE MENSCHEN – ANIMALS AND OTHER PEOPLE (Österreich 2017, Flavio Marchetti, Best of Fests). In a Vienna animal shelter over a thousand animals are lovingly cared for every day. With great empathy and without commentary the film uses the example of this venerable institution to raise important ethical questions about the relationship between humans and animals.
UNE JEUNESSE ALLEMANDE – A GERMAN YOUTH (Frankreich, Schweiz, Deutschland 2015, Jean-Gabriel Périot, DOK.special). The federal republic of the 1960s and its youth: upheaval, disillusionment, politicisation, and radicalisation. Without commentary and using solely archive material, this skilfully assembled film conveys the rise and fall of the RAF with its sights always on the present.
VIOLENCE IS TO CHARGE 600 EUROS – PUBLIC LAND II – VIOLENCE IS TO CHARGE 600 EUROS – PUBLIC LAND II (Griechenland, Spanien, Deutschland 2017, Elena Friedrich, Student Award). Film or philosophy? A dialogue, a car full of oranges - and a juicer. A short discourse about society, images and power, expressed in images that defy the power of representation.
VON WEGEN "SCHICKSAL" (Deutschland 1979, Helga Reidemeister, Retrospektive). Irene Rakowitz gets divorced after 20 years of marriage and takes her life into her own hands. She is faced with a lack of understanding from her husband Richard and with fierce resistance from her 14-year-old daughter Astrid. A hugely important film on the topic of emancipation – not only in 1979.
